During harvest time two young strong brothers left the mountains to go to the plain land where workers were needed. When they came to the plains they said to a rich farmer: "If you give us meals and ten guineas we will bring your corn to the barns."

"Ten guineas is too much," answered the farmer, "and I think twenty florins are more than sufficient."

"We must have ten guineas," said the two brothers, "a smaller sum will not help very much. If you cannot pay us then we must turn to someone else."

"But why in the world do you need so much money?" asked the farmer.

"At home," replied the brothers, "we have another brother who is fourteen years old and an expert carriage maker has offered to take him on as an apprentice in the work, provided he is paid the necessary money. Since our father is not able to provide such a sum of money, we, who are the eldest, have decided to provide the money with our work."

"Very well, then," said the farmer, "because of your great brotherly love I will give you ten guineas, provided that you work to my satisfaction."

When the harvest was gathered in, the farmer paid them the ten guineas, saying: "You have honestly earned your wage and as a reward I grant you an extra guinea each."
